ABUJA: today Thursday, 14th May 2015, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Minister of Education licensed two private polytechnics and fifteen other tertiary institutions to operate diploma programmes under the regulation of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). He did this by presenting operating licences to the proprietors of successful private institutions that qualified for the licences. The event took place at the Ministry of Education's Conference Room at about 1000hrs.
Presenting them with the authority ( Licenses) to embark on running the courses, the Minister noted that apart from the National Diploma (ND) run by polytechnics, the National Innovative Diploma (NID) introduced for tertiary institutions is a short-cut for the youths to secure admission to Universities in furtherance of their education.
It was observed that, besides constituting a gateway for higher education, it is also a flexible programme designed to create entrepreneurs in small businesses, provide persons who could not (for time), procure regular education which requires regular and daily attendance of courses, carry out their businesses as well as educate themseves.
On how the Students Industrial Working Experience Scheme (SIWES) would inpact on Zibeh Institute of Technology, the proprietor, Dr. ZR Zakka replied thus:
" Zibeh Institute of Technology, is acknowledged as one of the best skills providing centres which is why many University under-graduates of the sciences, computer training in perticular fload the institution for their SIWES. With the License, we expectthat more JAMB candidates would make Zibeh Institute of Technology their first choice because of the knowledge and skills they would have inculcated unto them"
